Hints and Tips

"Or what to do if you hate insurance..."

If you don't like to spend any more time than necessary in a Brokerage Office
or on the telephone with them, these tips are for you!

Automobile Insurance
  • Make sure you declare all claims regardless of fault. All convictions or moving violations must be disclosed. Insurance companies hate surprises more than Brokers do.
  • When you purchase or rent a new vehicle, replacement cost is available for up to 30 months.
  • If your vehicle is over 10 years old, we need a mechanical inspection report.
  • We need drivers license numbers (out of province and/or current Alberta) and your birth dates, for all members of your household who drive.
  • Previous insurance (company, policy no. and expiry date), make, model, serial number, value, ownership, lien holder or leasor, usage, address and telephone numbers are also required.
  • With this information it is reasonably easy to give you an accurate quote and write up the policy as needed. Make our Broker's happy... happy Brokers save money.
  • Please, please... you are applying for a legal contract. Be honest.
  • Classic and antique vehicles have special requirements. Appraisal is a must. Only a limited number of companies will insure.

Property Insurance

  • Your home is probably your most valuable possession, besides your spouse (debatable which day?). In order to give you a proper quote and follow up with a policy that will meet your needs, and hopefully exceed them, these are some of the things you should consider: coverages; important possessions; liability exposures; etc.
  • To give you a quote, the square footage of your home, number of stories, age, value, recent updates and condition of roof are just some of the considerations that must be taken into account. We do a RCT EvaluRater so that we can arrive at the correct insurance replacement cost, which guarantees exactly that... Replacement cost.

MOVING TO ALBERTA?

Auto Insurance Procedures

Alberta Insurance, License and Registration must be obtained within a maximum of 90 days from becoming an Alberta Resident. Some restrictions may apply, please contact your current insurance provider for clarification.

  1. Obtain Claim's Experience Letters and Driver's Abstracts for all Drivers in household from your current insurance provider.
  2. For all vehicle(s) most recently registered outside of Alberta an Out of Province Inspection is required, forms can be purchased at an Alberta registry for approximately $9.54.
  3. Book an appointment with an Authorized Mechanic to have the Out of Province Inspection completed. In Airdrie we recommend W & B Auto their price is approximately $149.95 for the inspection.
  4. If vehicle is 10 years or older a Mechanical Inspection is required in addition to an Out of Province Inspection, most Mechanics will provide a Mechanical Inspection Form at no additional charge if requested at the time of the original appointment. Confirm this prior to booking your appointment.
  5. Once the Out of Province Inspection is completed you will have 14 days to obtain your Alberta Insurance.
  6. Obtain your Alberta Driver's License either at same time as step 2 or sometime before your appointment with our office. The charge for an Alberta License is $65.00 (5 year term).
  7. Book an appointment with our office once steps 1 through 6 are complete to obtain a quote and/or write a policy.
  8. Once a policy is in place you will be issued a Liability Certificate (Pink Card) with which you obtain your Alberta License Plate & Registration for your vehicle(s). The cost for a full year Registration of a private vehicle is $70.54 per year. Price is dependent on what month your renewal will be as renewals are based on the first letter of your last name.

Additional Tips

  • The fine for driving without insurance is $2500 minimum and soon to be increased. A commercial vehicle is $10,000. Other jurisdiction coverage may not automatically transfer to our province or be effective. Don't get caught with your "insurance" down.
  • The rules have also changed in that you must have a pink card, registration and drivers license with you when you have control of a motor vehicle. Otherwise your vehicle will be impounded and at the very least an appearance ticket will be issued requiring you to go to court, wasting everyone's time and money.
  • We have time payment plans available for everyone who buys insurance. This does not include insurance fines... save yourself the trouble, buy insurance from us.
  • Our office is always open for questions and advice whether you're a current client or not. If we can't help you, it's unlikely that anyone else will or will be motivated. We like to solve problems! Give us a chance.
  • Some coverage you can ask us about: replacement cost; reduced deductible of glass coverage; loss of use; rental of replacement vehicle and business use; accident forgiveness.

We'd love to give you a personal or business quote but most important, give us a call so we can help with all your insurance needs.
